History of the Curse
Lifelong
Chicago Cubs
fan William "Billy Goat" Sianis, owner of the
Billy Goat Tavern is said to
be the originator of the curse.
"The Cubs ain't gonna win no more!" were the last words uttered by Mr.
Sianis as he and his goat Murphy were ushered out of
Wrigley
Field on that fateful day of October 6, 1945.
It seems that William
Sianis had purchased two tickets to game 4 of the 1945 World Series
featuring the Chicago Cubs and
Detroit
Tigers and he intended to use them, but perhaps not as they were
intended. Showing up to the park prior to the game, he presented
his tickets and was initially led to his box seats along with Murphy in
tow.
Chicago Cubs owner P.K.
Wrigley soon got word of a stench emanating from the box seat area and
the presence of a goat that was causing a great commotion even before
the game started. Mr. Sianis and his goat were soon ejected,
"because the goat stinks," said Mr. Wrigley.
William Sianis was seen
throwing his hands into the air and as the curse goes went on to explain
that, "the Cubs will never win a
World Series so
long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field."
The Chicago Cubs of course went on to lose the series in seven games to
the Tigers and haven't been back since. Sianis sent a telegram to
Wrigley that in part read, "Who stinks now?"
